As a Mechanical Engineer - Optical Systems, you will support the design, analysis, and execution of complex opto-mechanical systems from requirements to final delivery, while collaborating with a collegial team of engineers and experts in optical design, opto-mechanics metrology, optical fabrication, manufacturing, and program management.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and Prototyping: Develop and design prototype hardware that meets performance requirements, applying 3D modeling, analysis, and simulation techniques such as FEA and hand calculations
- Tooling & Fixtures: Create assembly tooling and test fixtures, including jigs, alignment mechanisms, and metrology setups
- Lab Work & Experimentation: Conduct experiments to validate designs using lab setups and manage data acquisition and processing
- Prototype Assembly & Testing: Assemble prototypes and perform detailed testing, including writing test plans for opto-mechanical systems
- Tolerancing & Documentation: Create mechanical drawings using GD&T standards and ensure project information is maintained in accordance with ISO 9001
- Supplier & Manufacturing Support: Identify suppliers, develop part requirements, and support manufacturing by troubleshooting and working closely with shop-floor teams
Required skills
- Strong understanding of optical and mechanical engineering principles
- Experience in optical metrology techniques
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, FEA, and GD&T
- Knowledge of optical systems design and mounting methods for optics
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 procedures
- Hands-on experience: Practical experience in lab environments with prototyping, optical assembly, and precision engineering
Qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with 4-5 years experience contributing to the optical design process
- Background in precision engineering or opto-mechanical engineering
