Job Description:

About Us:

At AMETEK, we don’t just manufacture market-leading electronic instruments and electromechanical devices — we are using innovation to make the world a better place; technology to improve lives; and talent to solve challenges that matter.

Job Summary:

The Senior Buyer is responsible for ensuring the uninterrupted supply of materials and services required to support production schedules, customer commitments, and business objectives. This position requires an experienced, self-directed buyer who takes ownership of problems, works through obstacles, and drives issues to resolution without requiring constant direction.

The Senior Buyer will lead sourcing, negotiation, supplier-performance management, cost-reduction, and supply-risk mitigation activities. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong bias for action, sound judgment, persistence, and the ability to independently manage competing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

This role works closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, Sales, Finance, and Planning to improve supplier performance, control costs, prevent material shortages, and support new product introductions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently manage assigned suppliers and commodities, including sourcing, pricing, delivery, quality, inventory, and overall supplier performance.
  • Proactively identify supply risks and drive problems through resolution, including shortages, capacity constraints, late deliveries, quality issues, and other supplier-related disruptions.
  • Lead strategic sourcing, supplier selection, and negotiation activities to achieve cost-savings, working-capital, quality, and delivery objectives.
  • Negotiate pricing, payment terms, lead times, contracts, long-term agreements, consignment programs, and other commercial arrangements.
  • Develop strong supplier relationships while holding suppliers accountable for commitments, corrective actions, communication, and sustained performance.
  • Develop and maintain qualified alternate sources of supply and manage supplier transitions to reduce supply-chain risk.
  • Support new product introductions through supplier involvement, sourcing, quotation and cost analysis, and material readiness.
  • Partner with Engineering, Quality, Production, Planning, and other functions to resolve material issues and drive supplier development and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor supplier capacity, market conditions, and supply-chain risks, anticipating potential issues and communicating business impacts before they affect production or customers.
  • Deliver departmental KPIs, including cost savings, supplier OTD, inventory performance, and supplier development, while supporting achievement of at least 98% supplier on-time delivery.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, supply chain management, engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible purchasing, procurement, or supply-chain experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience independently managing suppliers, commodities, negotiations, shortages, and supplier-performance issues.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to take ownership, work through obstacles, manage changing priorities, and deliver results with limited supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and ERP systems; Oracle ERP experience is preferred.
  • Strong data-analysis and reporting capabilities.
  • Ability to work in person at the Rochester, New York, location.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States and access export-controlled information and source code, as required by AMETEK’s programs and products.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, bills of material, and technical specifications.
  • APICS/ASCM CPIM, CPSM, or equivalent supply-chain certification preferred.
  • Experience with strategic sourcing, supplier development, cost reduction, contract negotiation, and supply-risk mitigation.
  • Strong understanding of procurement, manufacturing, production planning, inventory management, and supplier-quality principles.
  • Experience working with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or structured continuous-improvement methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to use data and AI-enabled tools appropriately to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and cost performance.
  • Strong sense of urgency, attention to detail, accountability, and follow-through.

What’s in It for You:

  • Competitive compensation, holiday pay, and paid time off
  • Great benefits package that includes health, vision, and dental insurance
  • 401(k), plus matching
  • Flexible spending accounts (FSAs), health savings account (HSA) with AMETEK contribution, life insurance, disability insurance, and family medical leave
