The Lead Designer will oversee a team of mechanical designers responsible for developing 3D models, detailed drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs) for complex electromechanical assemblies. This role requires a minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical design, drafting, and Design for Manufacturability (DFM), with proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software. The Lead Designer ensures the team produces accurate and complete drawing packages and BOMs for new and revised designs, following standardized processes and conducting thorough design reviews. Key responsibilities include the development, implementation, review, and approval of engineering documentation. In addition to technical oversight, this role involves setting team goals, monitoring progress, and providing leadership and training to support organizational objectives.
How You Will Make an Impact
- Lead and manage a team of designers responsible for producing all technical documentation across the organization.
- Oversee the development, implementation, review, and approval of engineering documents to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Set and manage daily priorities, team goals, project schedules, and conduct annual performance reviews.
- Create and review technical drawings, design layouts, and conceptual models to support product development.
- Validate engineering documentation prepared by team members for completeness and correctness.
- Collaborate on design concepts and lead manufacturability reviews to ensure efficient production.
- Provide leadership and support to Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) in both strategic and hands-on roles.
- Independently execute engineering design changes and updates as needed.
- Manage item masters and BOM structures for new product introductions and updates.
What You Will Bring to the Role
- Extensive experience as a Mechanical Designer with a strong foundation in product design.
- Deep understanding of materials, components, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in machining techniques and design for manufacturability.
- Solid knowledge of drawing standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), specifically ASME Y14.5.
- Familiarity with military specifications and standards (Mil-Specs and MIL-STDs).
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Ability to take direction and execute tasks independently or collaboratively within a team.
- Self-motivated and proactive in problem-solving and project execution.
- Bachelor’s Degree or a related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
- Proven experience leading and managing technical design teams.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical product design.
Physical Requirements
- This position requires physical tasks including walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions.
- Capable of working in and around industrial equipment and machinery.
- Able to safely ascend and descend stairs and ladders.
- Willingness to work in environments that may contain dust, chemicals, and other industrial substances.
- Must be able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which may include: hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed boots, and hearing protection.
