Job Description: 

The Field Service Engineer is responsible for providing on-site service and support across Gatan's full product portfolio. This includes installation, repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and customer training for SEM and TEM products. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in microscopy.

 

Key Responsibilities

Customer Service & Field Support

  • Perform on-site installation, commissioning, service, and maintenance of Gatan products.
  • Provide customer support, including limited telephone troubleshooting and assistance.
  • Configure hardware and software systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Deliver customer training and technical instruction on product operation and best practices.

Technical Troubleshooting & Repair

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electronic, vacuum, mechanical, and software-related system issues.
  • Isolate system faults to the component level and perform required repairs.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams through the component level.
  • Verify that repaired systems meet all operating specifications before returning equipment to service.

Documentation & Administrative Support

  • Prepare detailed service reports documenting work performed and system status.
  • Complete billing, warranty, and other required service documentation accurately and in a timely manner.

Continuous Improvement & Product Feedback

  • Identify opportunities for product enhancements and propose design improvements based on field experience.
  • Share technical findings and customer feedback to support ongoing product development efforts.

 

Requirements 

Technical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Physics, Materials Science, or an equivalent field.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical diagrams.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing complex electronic, vacuum, and mechanical systems.
  • Strong ability to train and teach technical information to users.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-marking, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.

Professional Skills

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision in remote or isolated environments.
  • Strong sense of ownership with an enthusiastic, innovative, and customer-focused approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to address complex learning and development challenges while effectively communicating highly technical information.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with individuals at all organizational levels.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience servicing complex laboratory equipment and systems, including:
    • Electron microscopes (TEM/SEM)
    • Sample preparation equipment
    • Semiconductor equipment
    • Medical equipment
    • Other comparable technical systems

 

Working Environment

  • Field-based role supporting customer sites.
  • Extensive travel required, up to 80%.
  • Work involves installation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and customer training activities across multiple locations.
