Job Summary:
The NSI-MI Technologies mechanical engineering team develops precision positioning equipment for advanced antenna and radome measurement systems. Our work spans concept development, machine and structural design, engineering analysis, manufacturing support, system integration, testing, alignment, installation, and verification.
NSI-MI Technologies is seeking an experienced Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead significant mechanical design efforts and support project execution from requirements definition through factory integration testing, installation, and customer acceptance. This position requires advanced engineering judgment, strong product and system knowledge, and the ability to provide technical direction to multidisciplinary teams.
Working with minimal supervision, the engineer will develop standard and custom electromechanical systems incorporating motors, gearboxes, encoders, bearings, weldments, sheet-metal and composite structures, and precision-machined components. The successful candidate will assume technical ownership of assigned products, systems, and major design efforts throughout the product lifecycle and contribute to the continuous improvement of company products, design standards, and engineering practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the mechanical engineering scope of complex and technically challenging electromechanical systems and projects.
- Serve as a recognized subject matter expert for assigned products, applications, systems, or technical areas.
- Provide technical guidance and coordination to multidisciplinary engineering teams.
- Drive projects through requirements definition, design, analysis, fabrication, factory integration testing, installation, and customer acceptance.
- Define, validate, and implement mechanical, structural, and interface requirements.
- Develop concepts, trade studies, 3D models, drawings, specifications, bills of material, and technical documentation.
- Design and analyze precision motion systems, structures, weldments, mechanisms, bearings, gearing, and drive assemblies.
- Perform and validate stress, stiffness, deflection, tolerance, modal, vibration, fatigue, and stability analyses using engineering calculations, FEA, and test data.
- Apply engineering judgment to design, manufacturability, inspection, alignment, issue resolution, and system performance.
- Apply design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles to machined components, sheet metal, weldments, heat treatment, finishing, and assembly.
- Inspect components and assemblies using dimensional inspection and metrology equipment, including dial indicators, calipers, articulated measuring arms, and 3D scanners.
- Perform precision alignment and dimensional measurements using laser trackers and other metrology equipment.
- Lead design reviews and communicate technical decisions, assumptions, risks, and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, project teams, and customers to resolve fabrication, integration, installation, and field issues.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers and designers.
- Improve company products, systems, design standards, and engineering practices.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Ten or more years of relevant engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of advanced education and directly related experience.
- Extensive experience designing complex machinery, automated equipment, precision positioning systems, or electromechanical products.
- Strong knowledge of precision machine design, including weldments, bearings, gearing, drive systems, mechanisms, and fasteners.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or comparable 3D CAD software.
- Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and tolerance analysis.
- Ability to perform and interpret structural FEA and validate results using engineering calculations, test data, or other appropriate methods.
- Experience preparing production drawings and supporting fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing.
- Strong technical leadership, communication, mentoring, and problem-solving skills.
- Due to the nature of [BU's] programs and products, applicants must have the legal right to work in the U.S. and additionally must be legally authorized to access export-controlled information and source code.
- This position requires approximately 30% domestic and international travel.
Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- Experience with antenna measurement systems, aerospace or defense equipment, precision positioners, robotics, or automated machinery.
- Experience with servo-driven motion systems, metrology, laser trackers, precision alignment, and calibration.
- Experience designing large precision weldments with demanding stiffness, stability, accuracy, and alignment requirements.
- Professional Engineer license or progress toward licensure.
- Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
