Job Title: Project Engineer-Electromechanical Systems
Sunbury on Thames, SRY, GB, TW16 7EF
Scope of Role
We are seeking a Project Engineer to support the development, qualification, and delivery of advanced thermal-management components and systems for aerospace, defence, and military ground vehicle applications.
The role is suited to a hands-on engineer with solid mechanical engineering fundamentals, a strong interest in project execution, and the ability to coordinate engineering activities across a multidisciplinary programme. This is not expected to be a deep technical specialist role—rather, the successful candidate will focus on project delivery, engineering coordination, and robust execution, while still retaining enough engineering capability to understand designs, support manufacturing, and work with Principal Engineers.
You will contribute to product development across fans, fan heaters, cooling systems, and environmental control equipment, supporting both new programmes and in-service equipment. The role provides exposure to real hardware, shop-floor engagement, and direct customer interaction, with clear development routes toward Senior and Principal Engineer positions.
Responsibilities
- Project and Technical Execution
- Support Principal Engineers to ensure products meet customer specifications, regulatory requirements, and internal quality standards.
- Execute project engineering activities across design, build, test, and verification phases.
- Support interpretation of technical requirements and help define coherent engineering solutions.
- Produce and maintain engineering documentation including test specifications, qualification plans, schedules, and reports.
- Apply analytical understanding to assist with performance assessments and ensure compliance with technical requirements.
- Development, Testing and Verification
- Participate in prototype build activities and support manufacturing engineering on the shop floor.
- Define test rigs, support test execution, and prepare test reports.
- Support customer prototype evaluations and on-site testing where required.
- Provide robust problem-solving support to resolve engineering and build issues throughout the development lifecycle.
Product Support and Sustainment
- Provide technical support for legacy products in service, including investigation and reporting on warranty returns.
- Contribute to ongoing improvement, redesign, and technology roadmap activities.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with electrical engineering, systems engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams to ensure robust project execution.
- Participate in design reviews and occasionally represent engineering at customer or supplier meetings.
- Governance and Compliance
- Ensure all work follows company processes, configuration control, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Adhere to safety, quality, and business management system requirements.
Skills and Experience
- Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering, or a related discipline (mandatory).
- Strong engineering fundamentals with capability to understand mechanical designs, cooling systems, thermal-management or electromechanical components.
- Demonstrated experience in project engineering, engineering coordination, or multidisciplinary delivery roles.
- Knowledge of Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles.
- Hands-on mindset with the ability to work directly with prototype hardware and manufacturing teams.
- Ability to produce high-quality engineering documentation (test plans, reports, verification evidence).
- Structured problem-solving capability
- Strong organizational skills, able to manage multiple priorities.
- Good communication skills and ability to work across functions.
- Desirable
- Experience within aerospace, defense, automotive electrification, or high-reliability industries.
- Background in engine cooling systems, thermal or mechanical system development (fans, blowers, heaters, heat exchangers), military vehicle platforms.
- Manufacturing experience combined with design exposure.
- Exposure to CAE/FEA or system modelling tools.
- Familiarity with DFMEA or similar design-risk methods.
- Actively working toward Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or already chartered.
- Familiarity with risk management, failure analysis, and structured design methodologies.
- Proficiency with MS Office for analysis, reporting, and presentations.
- Background in scripting languages and AI.
- General Requirements
- Strong teamwork and collaboration across engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers.
- Ability to work within company processes, configuration control, and quality systems.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in parallel.
- Positive, proactive attitude and willingness to operate as a part of a global team.
- Flexibility to support customer visits, supplier reviews, and cross-site engagement when required.
