Job Description: 

The Metallurgical Lab Technician Specialist is responsible for performing metallographic sample preparation, conducting failure analysis activities, and supporting weld inspection processes in accordance with aerospace quality standards. This role ensures that materials and components comply with engineering specifications by applying advanced laboratory techniques, maintaining strict documentation practices, and adhering to international aerospace norms.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare metallographic samples, including cutting, sectioning, mounting, grinding, polishing, and chemical etching for microstructural evaluation.
  • Perform inspections to identify grain structure, phases, defects, and heataffected zones (HAZ) on aerospace components.
  • Conduct failure analysis following established aerospace laboratory methodologies.
  • Operate metallurgical laboratory equipment such as precision saws, mounting presses, polishers, microscopes, and hardness testers.
  • Interpret results in alignment with AWS, ASTM, and NADCAP requirements.
  • Document laboratory findings and prepare technical reports to validate compliance with engineering and design specifications.
  • Support audits and accreditation requirements related to NADCAP special processes.
  • Ensure adherence to safety, cleanliness, and regulatory guidelines within the laboratory environment.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams to resolve materialrelated issues.

 

Qualifications

  • Higher Technician or Engineering degree in Metallurgy, Materials, Chemistry, or related field.
  • 3 to 6 years of experience in quality control laboratories, preferably in failure analysis or weld inspection.
  • Hands-on experience in metallographic preparation techniques (cutting, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching).
  • Knowledge of aerospace standards including:
    • AWS D17.1 (aluminum and stainless-steel welding for aerospace)
    • ASTM E3 (specimen preparation)
    • ASTM E112 (grain size measurement)
    • NADCAP requirements for special processes
  • Experience using optical microscopes and laboratory precision equipment.
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate, and professional laboratory reports in English.
