Job Summary:

As an Electrical Engineering Intern at our facility specializing in rugged UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems, you will join our Sustaining Engineering team to support the validation, testing, and improvement of engineer-to-order UPS systems designed to meet stringent military standards and performance requirements. Under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will assist in verifying system designs, testing critical power components, and troubleshooting technical issues, gaining hands-on experience in power electronics, high-voltage systems (up to 400V), and safety practices.

Your role will involve supporting the development and execution of test processes, and assisting with agency certifications such as MILSTD,CE and UL at external labs. You will work closely with Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Manufacturing teams, contributing to tasks such as component qualification (e.g., transformers, circuit breakers, fuses, and power supplies), and documentation of test procedures and results. This internship offers a unique opportunity to build practical skills in power electronics, high-voltage testing, and rugged system design while collaborating with a skilled team to ensure product reliability and compliance in a dynamic, technical environment. This is an onsite, year-round internship based in Orange, CA, with an expectation of 20-28 hours per week during the academic year and the opportunity for full-time hours during school breaks.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Qualify and Test Components: Conduct qualification and testing of alternate components such as transformers, inductors, circuit breakers, relays, MOSFETs, and fuses.

  • Update Test Procedures: Revise and update test procedures for the validation of new products to ensure compliance with industry standards.

  • Documentation: Update and maintain drawings and datasheets to reflect the latest design changes and specifications.

  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose and troubleshoot complex circuit issues to identify and resolve problems efficiently.

  • Root Cause Analysis: Perform root cause analysis on failed components to determine the underlying issues and implement corrective actions.

  • Other tasks as assigned by management.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related STEM discipline, preferably Junior or Senior.

  • Due to the nature of IntelliPower’s programs and products, applicants must have the legal right to work in the U.S. and additionally must be legally authorized to access export-controlled information and source code.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with technical writing, specifically work instructions and process documentation

  • Experience using Microsoft Office products

  • Basic understanding of electronic test equipment such as:

    • DMM

    • DAQ

    • Oscilloscope

    • Power Meter

  • Basic understanding of circuit theory

  • Basic understanding power electronics is a plus

    • MOSFETS

    • GATE Drivers

    • DC/DC Converters Topologies

    • Inverter Topologies

    • Magnetics

Salary Range: The pay range for this position generally ranges between $25.00 to $28.00 per hour. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. In addition, AMETEK provides paid holidays and paid time off.
