The Technical Support Applications Specialist is an essential member of the ORTEC team and its Technical Support Group (TSG). This role provides both in-person and virtual technical support and expertise in the use of gamma and alpha spectroscopy equipment to customers and internal sales teams across all product lines. The position reports to the Technical Support Group (TSG) Manager.
CUSTOMER SUPPORT & TRAINING
- Provide expert guidance on the use and implementation of ORTEC systems through on-site visits, electronic communication, and phone support.
- Develop and deliver training materials to ORTEC customers via in-person and virtual formats.
- Assist in training programs focused on spectroscopy equipment and software applications.
- Manage incoming email and phone inquiries, logging support efforts in the CRM system.
- Coordinate and execute customer support requests for hardware/software installations, technical training, and maintenance contract services.
APPLICATIONS & SALES SUPPORT
- Interact with internal and external customers on new applications of standard ORTEC hardware/software and specifications for turn-key or custom systems.
- Support ORTEC initiatives in nuclear power plant counting rooms, environmental monitoring, medical isotope generation, research institutions, and government facilities.
- Collaborate with the global nuclear sales team and technical support resources to aid sales efforts and initiatives.

TECHNICAL EXECUTION
- Interpret analytical results from radiation measurement and detection equipment.
- Apply expertise in gamma and alpha spectroscopy, gas proportional and liquid scintillation counters, and computer-based data acquisition systems.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to high purity germanium detectors, silicon charged particle detectors, and related electronics.
- Maintain scheduling and coordination of support activities under tight deadlines.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree required.
- Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a production counting laboratory, nuclear power plant chemistry lab, medical radioisotope lab, or environmental lab preferred.
Technical Requirements:
- Strong attention to detail and exploratory mindset.
- Demonstrated experience with radiation detection equipment and techniques.
- Familiarity with governing regulations (e.g., NRC) for environmental and nuclear facility compliance.
- Experience with Microsoft Office and cloud-based applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Teams, Yammer, OneDrive).
- Programming experience in VBA, C, C++, C#, Linux, and other APIs preferred.
- Participation in technical and standards committees is desirable.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Can be onsite or remote depending on territory needs. If onsite, it is an office-based role within a manufacturing and technical support facility.
- Frequent interaction with production areas, customer sites, and technical equipment (e.g., counting labs, government and non-government facilities, field sites).
- Domestic travel up to 50% required; occasional international travel may be necessary.
- Fast-paced environment with shifting priorities and cross-functional collaboration.
