The Sr. Research Scientist will provide valuable contributions to the Technical Research team in various research tasks related to ORTEC products and processes. This includes supporting detector fabrication, applications, and product research projects. A successful candidate will have a strong technical background with a passion for harnessing new technology for practical business benefits.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Product and application related:
- Understand the ORTEC product and technology roadmap and identify, locate, and/or develop the IP necessary for successful realization of roadmap items.
- Participate in the development and refinement of the technology roadmap.
- Own several research projects and ensure that they are completed on time and within budget.
- Write white papers that summarize and document research and effectively communicate it to the engineering team for implementation.
- Support the broader R&D team when needed.
Production and processes related:
- Contribute to developing and introducing new refining, crystal growth, and fabrication techniques and support their transition to production.
- Plan and manage the integration of new processes into the production environment.
- Support the development and implementation of statistical process controls.
- Implement data-driven approaches to operational needs.
- When required, provide support to the existing detector manufacturing line.
Subject to the completion of your essential duties, a portion of your time will be allocated for you to proactively develop and pursue your own innovative ideas.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Ph.D. in materials, physics, or engineering and 10+ years of related industrial R&D experience in a complex/detailed process environment
- Experience in the production of crystalline materials and semiconductor fabrication is preferred
- Knowledge or nuclear physics and radiation detection principles
- Spectroscopy experience
- Strong statistical data analysis skills and experience
- Database management and implementation experience
- Programming skills (C#, Python, MATLAB, SQL, etc.)
- Practical machine learning experience
- Vacuum and cryogenic technology knowledge
- System level product design skills and experience
- Strong design of experiment skills
- Simulation experience (FEA, custom modelling, etc.)
- Basic knowledge of mechancial and electrical engineering principals (advanced knowledge preferred)
- Basic mechancial and electrical drafting skills (advanced knowledge preferred)
- Hands-on electrical and mechanical experience
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to operate effectively independently as well as in a team
- Strong leadership skills, high energy, and self-motivated
- Ability to work effectively in a team with diverse skillsets and backgrounds including manufacturing personnel, engineers, and technicians
- Excellent time management ability
- Ability to independently engage in self-directed learning
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of quality, 5S, and lean processes would be a plus
