The role of a Taylor Hobson placement student is predominantly to employ a problem-solving mindset to progress development of new TH instruments and react to manufacturing challenges facing our production and assembly departments.
To aid them in this, students have access to our rapid prototyping facility, using ‘Markforged’ 3D printers and our Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) printer to inspect and test designs.
They will work in collaboration with our on-site machine shop and assembly facilities regularly, where various TH instruments can be observed at every stage of production from their design conception to their shipment out the door. This will help students nurture an understanding of advanced manufacturing processes and product lifecycles.
Because of the dynamic nature of the precision metrology industry, placement students will benefit from being in a fast-paced and engaging work environment. They will work alongside experienced engineers, gaining fundamental engineering skills such as: advanced CAD skills, competency with GD&T, a hands-on understanding of metrology and a professional approach to design for manufacture.
