We are looking for an experienced energetic and enthusiastic Senior Electronics Engineer at our Leicester site to play a critically important role as we continue to drive growth with an exciting range of world-leading products. You will be part of a highly skilled team and will have high levels of responsibility for R&D and product lifecycle.
The work is varied, interesting and demanding as we expect high standards for quality and performance. With good theoretical and practical technical knowledge, you will be responsible for implementation of electronic/firmware systems and designs that are integral to the function and performance of our products.
The ideal candidate will enjoy a mix of desk based work and hands-on work in labs, workshops, and manufacturing areas of the Leicester site. You will excel at cross-functional problem solving with a focus on electronics, firmware, and systems engineering for high value and custom machinery. You will be open minded, adaptable, and able to pick up new skills, tools, and techniques – whatever it takes to do the job. You will enjoy urgent troubleshooting and also have the discipline to follow-up and ensure solutions are properly captured in our documentation system.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide cross-functional systems design support to the engineering and manufacturing of high value customised products. To include problem solving, hands-on implementation, testing, and documentation.
- To work closely with Manufacturing and Research & Development functions ensuring electronic products are designed for external manufacture/assembly.
- To liaise with mechanical, electronics, and software engineers as required to understand and support the best solutions to system level problems.
- To understand product lifecycle from cradle to grave and to provide support to sustaining products throughout the lifetime, including applicable support to other departments.
- To travel to customer sites or suppliers or other Taylor Hobson / Ametek facilities from time to time in support of business operations.
- To be a key player in the R&D team and more specifically within the Electronics section.
Essential Skills, Attributes, and Experience
- Demonstrable industrial experience over at least 5 years working in the development of electro-mechanical machinery with a strong knowledge of electronic control systems and an appreciation of mechanical mechanisms.
- An ingrained basic understanding of electronics including analogue and digital. More advanced knowledge of the application of electronics to control applications and industrial settings.
- Ability to interpret wiring diagrams and electronics schematics. Circuit design, PCB design, and manufacture including prototyping.
- Hardware and firmware development for microcontrollers in applications such as data acquisition and motor control, including good knowledge of data transfer and communications.
- Good communicator, face to face, on-line, and through documentation.
- Self-motivated and take ownership with a proactive “get the job done properly” approach with the ability to work independently, maintaining team communication.
- Display a flexible approach to work and a willingness to learn and develop.
- Willingness to be hands-on such as prototyping cables, soldering and reworking PCBs, building and inspecting customisations.
- Able to coordinate others during pressured times to get the job done.
- To understand safety and safe working practices in an R&D environment.
Desirable (but not essential) Skills
- Competent user of Altium Designer
- Experience with regulatory compliance for CE marking, EMC, LVD, & MD
- Competent user of SolidWorks or similar
- Understanding of product development methodologies & lifecycle
- Metrology Experience
- Motor types and their control
Qualifications
- HNC/D/Degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering or higher, or demonstrable ability through experience.
