The Studer Grinder Technician is responsible for the setup, operation, adjustment, and maintenance of Studer CNC cylindrical grinding equipment to manufacture precision components used in ultra-precision machining systems. This role requires a strong understanding of grinding processes, blueprint interpretation, geometric tolerances, and precision inspection methods. The technician will work with tight tolerances while ensuring safety, quality, delivery, and productivity objectives are achieved.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate Studer CNC cylindrical grinding machines to manufacture precision components.
- Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, process sheets, and work instructions.
- Perform machine offsets, tool changes, wheel changes, and program adjustments as required.
- Select and dress grinding wheels to meet process and quality requirements.
- Produce components to exact specifications and tight dimensional tolerances.
- Verify part quality using precision measuring equipment including:
- Micrometers
- Indicators
- Bore gauges
- Height gauges
- Surface finish equipment
- CMM data (when applicable)
- Inspect first-piece, in-process, and final dimensions to ensure compliance with engineering requirements.
- Monitor machine performance and identify opportunities to improve cycle times and quality.
- Troubleshoot grinding issues related to wheel wear, surface finish, dimensional variation, and machine performance.
- Perform preventative maintenance and routine cleaning of equipment.
- Maintain accurate production, quality, and inspection records.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and cost reduction.
- Work effectively with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams to resolve process issues.
- Follow all company safety policies, quality procedures, and ISO requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 3+ years of precision grinding experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience operating cylindrical grinding equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and GD&T.
- Experience using precision inspection equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to hold tolerances in the micron range or equivalent high-precision tolerances.
- Basic computer skills for production tracking and documentation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct experience with Studer CNC grinding machines.
- Experience with Fanuc or similar CNC controls.
- Experience grinding hardened materials, precision shafts, spindles, bearings, or optical/mechanical components.
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
- Technical certification in machining or manufacturing technology.
