Position Overview
The Mechanical Inspector is responsible for performing detailed mechanical inspections to ensure products meet internal and customer quality standards. This role is a hands-on position with a strong focus on precision inspection, data analysis, and collaboration with Engineering and Production teams. The Mechanical Inspector plays a key role in identifying quality issues, supporting corrective actions, and contributing to continuous improvement efforts across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform mechanical inspections of components and assemblies using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, pins, optical comparators, and CMMs.
- Program and operate CMM equipment to support complex inspection requirements.
- Verify product compliance with engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements.
- Document inspection results and ensure accurate recording of inspection data within ERP and QMS systems (e.g., labor tickets, defect tracking, and disposition).
- Maintain calibration of gauges and metrology equipment and ensure calibration records are current and accurate.
- Serve as a quality resource on the production floor by identifying nonconformances and supporting root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering and Manufacturing to resolve quality issues and support process improvements.
- Develop, update, and follow inspection plans, work instructions, and quality documentation.
- Analyze inspection data to identify trends and provide feedback to support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support internal audits and assist with compliance to ISO and other applicable quality standards.
- Participate in customer quality reviews and supplier quality evaluations as needed.
- Assist with preparation for external audits, certifications, and customer inspections.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Advanced knowledge of mechanical inspection methods and measurement techniques, including CMM programming and operation.
- Strong understanding of quality standards and inspection requirements (e.g., ISO, ANSI).
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, GD&T, specifications, and schematics.
- Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks or equivalent.
- Working knowledge of machining processes, metallurgy, and industrial finishes.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate inspection data and identify trends.
- Excellent documentation and reporting skills.
- Proficient with computers and quality-related systems for data entry and tracking.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to obtain required security clearances, as applicable.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or vocational training plus 2+ years of inspection and quality control experience.
- Experience with quality management systems and audits preferred.
