We are seeking a Sr. Alignment Turning Machinist to join our Special Optics team in Denville, NJ. At Special Optics, we specialize in custom microscope objectives and imaging solutions.
As a Sr. Alignment Turning Machinist, you will set up and operate alignment turning (ATS) equipment and precision CNC machines to manufacture and align optical components within mechanical assemblies. This role combines ultra-precision machining with optical alignment and supports both ATS operations and general lathe work as needed.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Set up and operate ATS / alignment turning equipment and precision CNC machines for turning, boring, facing, and threading.
- Program, edit, and optimize CNC code (G-code / CAM).
- Mount, secure, align components in fixtures or optical cells and parts to the optical axis using metrology tools.
- Machine critical features to micron-level tolerances.
- Measure and verify centration, runout, and surface quality; analyze measurement data and adjust setups/processes.
- Troubleshoot machining, alignment, and fixturing issues.
- Develop and document setups, processes, and procedures.
- Train technicians and support development of ATS capability.
- Perform routine maintenance and maintain organized work area.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- HS Diploma or equivalent, associate’s degree in Machining Technologies (or similar) strongly preferred.
- 7+ years demonstrated CNC Machining and precision turning operations experience/competency.
- Ability to hold tight tolerances to micro-level; experience with ATS systems; optical components or optical metrology preferred.
- Advanced math skills with ability to apply to complex setups; ability to read and interpret drawings, specifications, and GD&T.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with demonstrated ability to troubleshoot equipment/process issues and drive to resolution.
- Proficiency with G code programming and CAM software.
- Familiarity with interferometers, precision measurement tools, ultra-precision, or diamond turning equipment preferred.
- Working knowledge of lean manufacturing practices with a strong commitment to safety and quality.
- Highly organized and detail-oriented; able to work independently with strong ownership, accountability, and follow-through.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Collaborative team player with ability to communicate with, influence and mentor others.
- Driven to achieve with the ability to take initiative, be resilient and flexible with shifting priorities.
- Capable to lift and move up to 70 lbs. and standing for extended periods of time.
