Job Title: Senior Design & Manufacturing Engineer
Carson City, NV, US, 89706
Universal Analyzers AMETEK offers our team a unique opportunity to make an impact within a decentralized organization that combines the agility of a small company with the resources of a global enterprise. We are passionate about building a winning organization, increasing team knowledge, empowering our people, and creating long-term careers.
As an ISO 9001:2015 certified company, our primary focus is on customer satisfaction, responsiveness, and accuracy. This senior role leads manufacturing focused product engineering across the full lifecycle—driving value engineering, executing meticulous mechanical design with deep materials knowledge, and owning new product development from concept through launch. The engineer partners closely with Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Product Management to improve manufacturability, reliability, and cost while supporting day to day build and test activities on the shop floor. Experience with electrochemical sensing (e.g., pH/ORP) and industrial instrumentation/analyzers is highly beneficial; electronics and electrooptical knowledge are strong pluses.
In this position, you will:
-
Serve as the primary technical interface to Manufacturing—troubleshoot builds, clear constraints, and translate production feedback into robust design improvements.
-
Lead value analysis/value engineering (VA/VE) initiatives to increase functionality and reduce cost across existing product lines, including alternative materials, part consolidation, and supplier resourcing.
-
Own new product development (NPD) efforts using a stage gate process—requirements capture, system architecture, rapid prototyping, verification/validation, and launch readiness.
-
Perform rigorous mechanical design with appropriate tolerance analysis, GD&T, seal/pressure boundary design, and material selection for chemical compatibility, temperature/pressure, corrosion, and machinability.
-
Collaborate with Product Management, Sales/Applications, and Customers to align designs with performance, compliance, and lifecycle cost targets.
Manufacturing & Sustaining Engineering
-
Provide hands on support for builds, pilot lots, and transitions to production; create/maintain work instructions and routings.
-
Drive structured root cause analysis and corrective actions (5Why, Ishikawa); maintain clear problem statements and verification of fixes.
-
Manage the Engineering Change process (ECR/ECO) with complete impact assessment across drawings, BOMs, routings, documentation, inventory, and fielded units.
Value Engineering / Cost & Supply
-
Facilitate cross functional VA/VE workshops; quantify savings, functionality, and risk; implement approved changes through release.
-
Partner with Supply Chain to qualify alternates and low-cost region suppliers where appropriate, preserving performance and compliance.
New Product Development
-
Lead design reviews; maintain requirements traceability; plan and execute V&V test plans; ensure DFM/DFA and serviceability are embedded.
-
Perform and/or coordinate DFMEA/PFMEA; ensure control plans and CTQs flow to drawings/specifications.
-
Prepare technical documentation packages for certification and regulatory submissions as required.
Technical Domain Expertise
-
Design pressure retaining and sealed assemblies; select and size Orings and sealing features suitable for process fluids and environments.
-
Apply materials science principles—compatibility with acids/alkalis/solvents, galvanic concerns, coatings, and heat treating—with a practical eye on machinability and cost.
-
Demonstrate working knowledge of electrochemical sensing (e.g., pH/ORP) or related devices; familiarity with industrial analyzers and instrumentation is highly beneficial.
-
Familiarity with electronics (analog frontends, signal conditioning, grounding/shielding) and electrooptics is a plus for cross disciplinary design.
Tools, Data, and Documentation
-
Create and maintain multilevel BOMs for complex assemblies; ensure configuration control and serialization as applicable.
-
Produce and check 3D models and drawings to company standards; follow CAD/PLM file management and release practices.
-
Interface with customers for drawing approvals and FEED packages when required; support field issues with responsive engineering changes.
-
Leverage ERP data (costed BOMs, routings) to quantify design decisions and measure realized savings.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- No direct reports. Provides technical leadership to cross functional project teams and may mentor engineers/technicians.
Qualifications and Abilities:
-
Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering.
-
8+ years of experience in mechanical design and manufacturing engineering; experience in industrial instrumentation, sensors, or analyzers preferred.
-
Proficiency with 3D CAD (Solid Edge preferred) and drawing standards; strong GD&T and tolerance analysis.
-
Demonstrated ownership of ECR/ECO and configuration control; experience with PLM systems.
-
Fluency in BOM development for top level assemblies and configuration variants; experience with ERP (e.g., Epicor) is beneficial
-
Handson lab/shop skills—prototype builds, fixtures, test setups, and safe practices.
-
Applied knowledge of materials (metals, polymers, elastomers) for chemical compatibility, corrosion, and manufacturability/machinability.
-
Working knowledge of electronics or electrooptical subsystems is advantageous for system level design.
-
Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, and Product Management; capable of customer facing technical discussions.
-
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment and deliver to commitments.
Physical Demands:
- This position is primarily office and lab/shopfloor based, requiring extended periods of computer work with frequent movement within the facility. Occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs may be required.
