Job Description: 

The Director of Operations & Supply Chain is an essential member of the Amptek leadership team contributing to the development and execution of the business’s annual strategic plan. The incumbent will lead the end-to-end supply chain strategy and execution across global operations for an x-ray detector and source division with manufacturing sites in both the US and Finland and a global customer base. Operations include wafer production, detector and x-ray source manufacturing, assembly, and test, materials procurement and supply chain management, shipping/receiving, and facilities management, including EHS and quality. 

The Director of Operations leads the efforts of over 50 people through a team of professionals including Materials/Supply Chain Manager, US Operations Manager, and Finland Operations Manager. This position reports directly to the Vice President/ Business Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

SUPPLY CHAIN EXCELLENCE

  • Oversee all aspects of supply chain management, including materials procurement, inventory control, supplier relationships, and logistics across global sites.
  • Optimize the flow of goods from suppliers through production to customers.
  • Establish and monitor key supply chain KPIs for quality, cost, delivery, and safety.
  • Coordinate manufacturing and supply chain activities with other business functions and suppliers to maximize resource utilization and ensure timely fulfillment.
  • Interface with key vendors and suppliers on all supply chain related activities, executing strategies to reduce cost or negotiate supplier contracts as needed.

OPERATIONAL PROCESS IMPROVEMENTS

  • Drive operational improvements in Clean Room, Detector Manufacturing, and Tube Manufacturing with extensive deployment of six sigma methodologies to improve yields, lower inventory, and reduce cost.
  • Lead initiatives to reduce working capital, focusing on inventory and scrap reduction
  • Implement best practices in demand forecasting, inventory management, and production planning within ERP system, ensuring accurate data integration and process alignment across regions.
  • Lead operation activities with a quality and continuous improvement mindset, maintaining and implementing a QMS via ISO 9001.

STRATEGIC PLANNING & BUSINESS GROWTH

  • Develop and execute long-term operational and supply chain strategies to support global business objectives such as shipment goals, quality levels, and growth targets.
  • Lead capital expansion initiatives, including site expansions, equipment investments, and capacity planning to ensure supply chain scalability and resilience.
  • Implement key change initiatives, manage cross-functional teams, and drive adoption of new processes, continuous improvement initiatives and technologies
  • Identify and mitigate operational risks, including supply chain disruptions and business continuity threats.
  • Provide guidance to the development of manufacturing process plans, including personnel requirements, material needs, subcontract requirements, facility needs, tooling needs, or equipment needs as business grows

  • Determine responsibilities of assigned organization and staff positions to accomplish business objectives and review functional and individual performance
  • Mentor and develop a diverse, high-performing global operations and supply chain team.
  • Train and ensure all assigned employees are aware of and comply with company, government and customer policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and innovation.
  • Additional Operations responsibilities as required.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CONSIDERATION:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, operations management, physics, materials science, or engineering, MBA preferred
  • Minimum 10 years supply chain leadership experience including at least five of those years in an operations management role.
  • Experience managing global teams and navigating multicultural environments

Technical Experience:

  • Formal six-sigma training and experience required - black belt preferred.
  • Strong Root Cause Analysis mindset
  • Demonstrated proficiency in data analytics and skilled in leveraging data for problem solving
  • Must have the ability to multitask with strong time/priority management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written (English) communication skills
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to details
  • Strong proficiency with office productivity applications (Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, Word, Adobe)
  • Experience with ISO 9001 required
  • Expertise in efficient management of ERP systems required, Business Central is a plus.
  • Experience in material spectrometry and technology, such as XRF, preferred.

Working Environment:

  • Onsite role based in Bedford, MA
  • Mix of office, clean room, and manufacturing environments, requiring adaptability
  • Direct supervision of 1 resource in Espoo, Finland and 2 in Bedford, MA, USA.
  • International collaboration with teams in Finland, US, and China, including cross-cultural communication.
  • Fast-paced, hands-on environment, supporting both corporate and local teams.

Travel

  • 20% - Travel to US manufacturing location and international suppliers possible
